Living Light: Projection Mapping in Bergen
Role: Motion Design & Mapping Specialist Year: 2025
For the annual "Lights Festival" (Lichtjesavond) in Bergen, I was commissioned to bring two iconic landmarks to life using projection mapping: the historic Ruins Church (Ruïnekerk) and a vacant, dilapidated hotel.
The Concept The project focused on character animation tailored to complex geometry. Rather than standard loops, I designed a family of "light creatures" to inhabit the architecture.
The animations featured anthropomorphic flames, light bulbs, and candles that interacted with the physical features of the buildings—peeking around columns, jumping across window frames, and illuminating the texture of the old masonry.
Technical Approach
Ruins Church: Mapping organic animations onto rough, irregular 15th-century brickwork.
The Hotel: Utilizing the abandoned façade to create a playground for the digital characters, turning a dark building into a source of joy.
